Dr. William S. Marras is a Professor and holds the
Honda Endowed Chair in the Department
of Industrial, Welding and Systems Engineering at the Ohio State University. He is also
the director of the Biodynamics
Laboratory and holds adjunct appointments in the Departments of
Orthopaedic Surgery, Department of Physical Medicine, and the
Biomedical Engineering Department. Professor Marras is the
Executive Director of the Ohio State University Institute for Ergonomics and
serves as director of the Center for
Occupational Health in Automotive Manufacturing (COHAM). His
pioneering research applies quantitative engineering techniques to
occupational surveillance, laboratory studies, and mathematical
modeling where he explores the occupational causality of low back pain
as well as techniques for the clinical assessment and treatment of low
back pain. Professor Marras’ findings have been published in over 185
peer reviewed journal articles and numerous book chapters. He
serves as Deputy Editor for the journals Spine and Human Factors and is also the
current chair of the National Academy of Science’s (National Research
Council) committee on Human Systems Integration. Dr. Marras was
elected to the National Academy of Engineers in 2009.
Professor Marras’ work has attracted
national as well as international recognition. Among these
awards, he is a two-time winner (1993 and 2002) of the prestigious
Swedish Volvo Award for Low Back Pain Research, Austria's Vienna Award
for Physical Medicine, The Jack A. Kraft Innovator Award, The Liberty
Mutual Prize for Injury Prevention Research, and the National Institute
for Occupational Safety and Health’s Alice Hamilton Award for Science
Award. He was also recently awarded an honorary Doctor of Science
degree from the University of Waterloo for his work on the biomechanics
of low back disorders. He is a fellow of the American Institute of Medical and
Biological Engineers, the Human
Factors and Ergonomics Society, the International
Ergonomics Association, and the Ergonomics Society. Professor
Marras recently published a new book entitled The Working Back: A systems view.
