INTRODUCTION TO THE CHAPTER:   (return to top)

The Central Ohio Chapter, an affiliate of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, was formed in 1987.  Its purpose is to promote and advance the understanding of the human factors involved in the design, manufacture, and use of machines, systems, and devices of all kinds through the interchange of knowledge and methodology in the behavioral, psychological, biological, and physical sciences.

Practitioners, students, and academicians with interests in human factors, ergonomics, safety or related areas are encouraged to join the chapter and participate in its activities.  Local chapter membership does not require membership in the national society.

EVENT CALENDER:  (return to top)

ELECTIONS:  We would like to get the chapter back into full operating mode, which includes holding elections for officers.   Please consider running for an office.  To determine your eligibility to run for office and which office would be of interest to you, please review the chapter membership information, just below at the next bullet, and the chapter's constitution and bylaws, to see the list of officers and their duties.

EVENTS:   Please contact us with your suggestions for speakers, tours, etc.  If you are an HFES member or work in an area related to Human Factors/Ergonomics, please feel free to suggest yourself as a speaker or invite the chapter to tour your work facilities.

Title: Team Coordination and Event Management by Distributed Experts

Abstract:  The increasing complexity of modern engineering systems creates new demands for effective team coordination, information sharing, and distributed performance.  Systems engineering considerations for improved human-automation interactions require improved robust system performance designs, including recognition of effective information flow and the ability of humans to effectively operate in and recover from nominal as well as degraded performance conditions.  The requirements for effective information flow and context sharing between distributed experts has led the author to develop the principles of distributed supervisory coordination, an evolution of Sheridan's Human Supervisory Control paradigm applied to team-based cognitive engineering settings.   This presentation also describes issues of coordinated recognition, response, and management of events as performed by physically, temporally, or cognitively distributed experts.

About the speaker:  Professor Caldwell's research is focused on how people get, share, and use information in complex task settings. His work is especially relevant to team performance in time critical environments such as space flight operations,  healthcare operations, and other tasks where distributed human experts manage complex systems.  He has worked with state government agencies, companies, hospitals, and NASA research centers, and has been an invited participant in several programs of the National Research Council / National Academy of Engineering.

In addition to his teaching and research activities, Dr. Caldwell also served as Program Chair for the Annual Meeting of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society from 2003-2008.
