MS Program Requirements

Students may select thesis or non-thesis programs of study. The non-thesis program is considered a terminal degree program and the thesis program is more research oriented. Only students who complete the thesis program are eligible to continue on into the Ph.D. program.

The thesis program requires a minimum of 45-quarter hours including at least 33 hours of course work and 6 hours of thesis credit. The course work consists of a depth requirement (3 course minimum), a breadth requirement of at least three courses from other areas within ISE, and elective course work. An oral defense of the thesis is also required.

The non-thesis program is also a 45-hour program consisting of course work in the same breadth and depth requirements described previously plus electives. This option is not available for the Human Factors major. A final comprehensive examination consisting of both written and oral parts is required. Students select their plan of study in consultation with their advisors considering professional objectives, and other factors.

Ph.D. Program Requirements

The Ph.D program requires 135 quarter hours of study beyond the baccalaureate. Students are given 45 hours of credit for their Master's Degree and must complete at least an additional 45 hours of course work and 45 hours of dissertation research credit. The course work consists of a major area of study with at least 21 hours, and 2 minors of at least 9 hours each. One of the minor areas must be selected outside of the ISE program.

The student is advised throughout the coursework phase of his/her program by a committee of 4 graduate faculty members, 2 in the major, 1 in each minor. This committee administers the candidacy exam after the course work has been completed. After the successful completion of the candidacy exam, the student is considered a doctoral candidate. At this point a research committee of at least 3 graduate faculty members is formed to supervise the dissertation research.

The candidate is then required to present their dissertation research at the proposal colloquium. Upon completion of the research, a final oral defense of the dissertation is required.
